Peugeot 407 - Raod Test Source Channel4 - 4Cars The deck of cards has been well and truly been stacked against the Peugeot 407. As the large French family car gracefully nears middle age it's had to fend off a barrage of talented new competition from Ford, Mazda, Honda and, soon, Vauxhall - all out to chip away at the 20,000 407s sold a year. To level the playing field and fight back against the Vectra-replacing Insignia, the French firm has called in the surgeons for a quick nip and a tuck. Question is, will the UK buyers notice the revised grilles, new rear lamps, chrome painted rub-strips, mock rear diffuser and the new 'piano black' plastic dash? We're not so sure, but company car buyers might. In comes a value-packed SR-trim, along with a cleaner tweaked line of diesels and the availability of a biofuel-powered 407 for the first time. So what's it like on the road? Past its sell-by-date? It would be unwise to write it off. The original Peugeot 407 was one of our favourite cars in the class so surely it must still be among the repmobile heavy hitters. Quality and Reliability A piano-black finished dash does not automatically promote the revised 407 to the top of the class for quality. There's still suspect, cheap-feeling plastic a fingertip away. And it still feels a bit loose - the horrid key ignition surround on one of our cars had too much play, but considering the price, you might feel happy to put up with a few of these 'foibles'. Unfortunately, you might be put off by Peugeot's reputation. It has been consistently near the bottom of the JD Power customer satisfaction surveys, as well as other reliability studies. In the most recent JD Power 2008 survey the brand languished at the bottom of the table in joint 22nd position with Renault. Owners of the 407 aren't a happy bunch: it ranks 87th out of 100 for satisfaction with owners highlighting poor reliability and issues with the suspension, steering, brakes and service they received at their dealers. On the Road Peugeot has never cut corners with the 407's drive. The revised car uses the double-wishbone front suspension from the original car although spring and damper rates have been re-worked. We drove the new Euro 5 compliant 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel and we were stunned by its ability, especially at high speed where it proved well able to filter out bumps. Only at lower speeds did some of the nastier road imperfections become noticeable. It's a great effort considering the 407 is as agile as ever, with fine composure, high grip levels and enough information about the road conditions coming through the cabin to make the driver feel really involved. The new engine offers 4bhp more than the previous Euro 4 effort and it is noticeably quieter, but it's still found wanting when mid-range shove is required for more urgent overtaking manoeuvres. Performance is reasonable, but not sparkling: the 0-62mph sprint takes 9.8 seconds. The other diesels available include the unchanged 168bhp 2.0 HDI and the efficient 109bhp 1.6 HDI that has been tweaked for better fuel economy and lower emissions. The only petrol engine available - until a new lower polluting 1.8 arrives - is a Bioflex 2.0-litre than can run on E85 ethanol-petrol. The 138bhp Bioflex feels noticeably down in torque and pace (148lb-ft v the 240lb-ft for the punchier diesel) but it feels even more agile than the HDI alternative. Unfortunately, there's only a five-speed manual, which is outgunned by the diesel's six-speed box, and this is particularly noticeable on motorways where things get particularly noisy: the diesel is much more usable and refined.
